Everyone is invited to celebrate nature and nurture peace at the Peace Day Hawaii 2012 event at the Pearl City Urban Garden Center (UGC)
This year’s theme is cultivating peace by introducing peace gardens in educational partnerships with schools & community.
The UGC will be open to the public between 1-5pm to explore the gardens. The formal inauguration ceremony will be 3-4 pm with dedication of the Peace Gardens Pathways, guest speaker Maya Soetoro-Ng, live music by Jeff Peterson, entertainment, refreshments & the launching of the first three peace gardens. Parking is available on the grounds. Seating is limited, participants are encouraged to bring outdoor chairs.
January 2007, Hawaii state legislators passed the Resolution….
“that September 21 of each year shall be known and recognized as “Peace Day” to promote peace programs, improve international relations, and increase educational awareness of peace…All citizens shall be encouraged to observe and celebrate the blessings of peace and endeavor to create peace on peace day.”
On April 18, 2007, the Governor signed House Bill 345 into law as Act 23, which made Hawaii the first state in the United States to officially recognize the United Nation’s International Day of Peace, now celebrated in more than 200 countries worldwide.
